Performance

I tested RamNode’s Standard VPS 4GB plan: 4 vCPUs (Intel Xeon, Icelake generation, one thread per core), 4GB RAM (3.8GB usable), 120GB SSD storage (116GB usable), 8TB bandwidth, and 1 IPv4 address included, priced at 20/mo.(0.030/hr). Ubuntu 24.04.5 LTS was the OS.

These results apply to this specific tier, not to RamNode’s Standard VPS lineup as a whole, which runs from a $4/mo single-core plan up to an $80/mo 8-core plan, and not to the separate Lite Cloud VPS, Premium VPS, Storage VPS, or Dedicated CPU VPS lines RamNode also sells, each built on different hardware allocations and priced differently.

I ran the standard suite in order: sysbench for CPU and memory, fio for disk, Ookla for network, then three separate 180-second stress-ng runs to see how the server held up under sustained load rather than a short burst.

CPU Performance

The single-thread test, one worker calculating prime numbers up to 20,000 for 10 seconds, returned 1,049.58 events per second with an average latency of 0.95ms per operation. This number tells you how the server handles work that can’t be split across cores: a single database query, a script running step by step, or any process that depends on one core finishing its job before the next step starts.

The multi-thread test, the same workload spread across all 4 vCPUs, returned 3,644.38 events per second.

Dividing that by the single-thread result gives a scaling factor of about 3.5x across 4 threads, close to linear but not quite there.

The gap shows up in the thread fairness numbers: the four threads averaged 9,120.5 events each with a standard deviation of 336.44, meaning some threads finished noticeably more work than others in the same window.

That unevenness is consistent with a shared or oversubscribed CPU allocation, where vCPUs aren’t getting fully dedicated, uninterrupted access to physical cores. It isn’t a hard proof of oversubscription on its own, sysbench’s own thread-fairness metric is a coarse signal, but a fully dedicated 4-core allocation typically scales closer to 4x with a tighter spread than this.

What this means practically is single-threaded workloads like a WordPress page render, a small API handling requests one at a time, or a script-based automation job will see performance closer to that single-thread number, around 1,050 events/sec in this test.

Workloads that can genuinely parallelize, batch image processing, a build pipeline compiling in parallel, or a multi-worker application server, benefit from the extra cores, but the fairness numbers suggest that benefit won’t scale as cleanly as it would on a less contended allocation.

Memory Performance

Sequential memory write came in at 5,096.64 MiB/sec, and sequential read at 6,093.54 MiB/sec.

These numbers measure how fast the server can move data through RAM, not how much RAM it has. The 3.8GB capacity and this throughput number are two separate questions: a workload could run into an out-of-memory condition on this 3.8GB allocation long before it ever bottlenecks on memory speed, and vice versa, a workload that fits comfortably in 3.8GB could still feel slow if it depended on memory bandwidth this test didn’t stress heavily.

In practical terms, this throughput is adequate for typical VPS use, an application server keeping session data in memory, a small Redis cache, or a database’s buffer pool operating within what fits in 3.8GB.

Where it becomes a real constraint is capacity rather than speed. 3.8GB is a small allocation for anything running multiple services at once, a full LAMP stack plus a cache layer plus monitoring agents can eat into that quickly, independent of how fast the memory itself moves data.

Disk Performance

These three numbers describe different things, and reading only the sequential results would give an incomplete picture. Sequential write and read measure how fast the disk moves large, continuous blocks of data, relevant to backups, large file transfers, or restoring a big database dump from a single file.

The 1,981 MiB/s sequential read result is fast for a VPS-class disk, and the 441 MiB/s sequential write, while lower, still reflects continuous throughput rather than the kind of access pattern most applications actually generate.

The 4K random test is the more relevant number for most real workloads. Databases, an operating system reading and writing many small files, and typical application logic don’t move data in large continuous streams, they read and write scattered small blocks, which is what this test simulates.

At roughly 16,000 IOPS in both directions and around 62 MiB/s of raw throughput, this configuration handles small random operations well relative to the sequential numbers, IOPS-heavy workloads like a relational database under moderate load or a busy filesystem with many small files should perform reasonably here.

RamNode’s marketing and documentation reference SSD and NVMe storage tiers depending on the plan. Nothing in this benchmark identifies which underlying storage technology backs this specific instance, fio measures what the guest OS can read and write, not the physical drive type or whether that I/O is shared with other tenants on the same host. I can report what the numbers show, not what hardware produced them.

Network Performance

Both runs used the same Ookla test server, Eranium B.V. in Amsterdam, with InMotion Hosting listed as the ISP. Running it twice against the same server was meant to check for a fluke result rather than confirm consistency across different routes, and the two runs landed close together, so a one-off spike doesn’t explain these numbers.

What this test does not tell you is how this server performs to every point on the internet. Speedtest measures the path between this VPS and one specific test server. A visitor connecting from a different region, on a different network, over a different route, will see different numbers than what’s reported here.

I don’t have the VPS’s own hosting location confirmed from the notes provided, only the location of the test server it reached, so I can’t say how these results would look from a different measurement point or compare them directly to a provider tested against a different Speedtest server.

Zero packet loss on both runs is a clean result on its own terms: no dropped packets between this server and Amsterdam during either test window.

Stress Testing

I ran three separate 180-second stress-ng workloads to see whether the server held up under load sustained well past what a short benchmark burst shows.

All three stressors ran their full duration and reported zero failures and zero untrustworthy metrics flags. That’s evidence the server stayed operational and kept processing work through three straight minutes of sustained CPU, memory, and disk pressure applied one at a time.

It does not prove long-term reliability, three minutes under stress-ng says something about behavior during this specific test window, not about what happens under sustained load over hours, days, or concurrent load across all three resource types at once, which I didn’t test.

What This Configuration Fits

Based on the resources and the results above, this 4 vCPU, 3.8GB configuration fits smaller, single-purpose workloads more than resource-heavy or highly parallel ones.

A small WordPress or CMS site, a development or staging environment, a lightweight API, or a single Docker container running one application would all sit comfortably within what this server demonstrated: solid single-thread CPU performance, disk I/O strong enough for typical database access patterns, and network throughput with no packet loss in testing.

Workloads that lean heavily on parallel CPU work, several concurrent build jobs, or an application expecting close to 4x scaling across cores, may not see the full benefit given the thread fairness spread in the multi-thread test. Multiple memory-hungry services running simultaneously will also compete for a relatively small 3.8GB allocation faster than they’ll hit a memory speed ceiling. I don’t have data from this testing to support specific claims about how many concurrent users, requests, or database queries this configuration can handle, so I’m not estimating capacity numbers here.

Overall Performance

RamNode’s Standard VPS 4GB plan, 4 vCPUs, 4GB RAM, 120GB SSD, at $20/mo, handled every test I ran without errors, including three full stress runs with zero failures.

Single-thread CPU performance is solid for typical single-process workloads, though the multi-thread test showed uneven work distribution across cores that suggests some contention rather than a fully dedicated allocation, a detail buyers paying for 4 full cores should factor in.

Disk performance is strong on both sequential and 4K random access, which covers both large file operations and the smaller, scattered I/O patterns that databases and general application use generate more often, a reasonable return for the price. Network testing showed high throughput and zero packet loss against one Amsterdam-based test server, though that result describes one route, not the server’s connectivity everywhere.

None of this extends to any other plan in RamNode’s Standard VPS range, or to the Lite, Premium, Storage, or Dedicated CPU VPS lines. This is what the 4GB Standard tier did under testing, not a verdict on RamNode’s VPS range as a whole.

Ease of Use

Getting from the homepage to a running server should be the simplest part of any hosting purchase. I worked through that path on RamNode the way a new customer would: picking a plan, creating an account, landing in the client portal, and trying to turn that account into an actual, paid service.

Account creation moved fast. Everything after it took two false starts before an order went through, and the plan I’d picked at the start never came back up again.

Registration

I opened the Products menu from the homepage and selected Standard VPS under Cloud VPS, one of six VPS tiers listed there.

That dropped me on a dedicated Standard VPS page with two buttons up top, Create Your Server and View Pricing, and I clicked View Pricing to see the full lineup before committing to anything.

Scrolling down surfaced the complete pricing table, eight tiers running from a 512MB single-core plan up to a 16GB, 8-core plan. There was no way to select a plan from that table, just the eight tiers listed side by side and a single Sign Up Now button underneath all of them, so I clicked it to see where it led.

Clicking Sign Up Now took me to account creation, step 1 of 3. RamNode offered Google or email sign-up, and I chose Google to skip typing out another password.

It pulled my name and email straight from the Google account and checked them off automatically, then asked for a country, a state, and a password. I filled in United States and Arkansas and used the built-in Generate button rather than typing my own, which returned a password rated Strong with all four checks passed.

Step 2 of 3 turned out to be “Select Your Credit Amount,” a page for buying account credit rather than confirming the server I had picked.

I chose the $20 tier, marked Popular, with a $5 bonus for a $25 total, checked the Terms of Service box, and clicked Continue to Payment.

That click skipped a payment form entirely and dropped me straight into the client portal, on a dashboard reading 0 Services, 0 Quotes, 0 Unpaid Invoices, and 0 Tickets.

What I thought: Account creation itself is fast and low-friction, Google autofill and a password generator get you through in under a minute. But at no point in these three steps did RamNode ask which server I wanted or take a payment for one. The Standard VPS I’d priced out on the pricing table never reappears after Sign Up Now, and step 2 quietly swaps “buy a server” for “buy account credit” without saying so anywhere on the page.

Dashboard and Client Area

Next, I wanted to look at the client area I’d just been dropped into, to see if it would point me toward launching the VPS I’d been looking at minutes earlier.

The dashboard itself gave no indication either way. Four counters, all reading zero, and a “No Active Services Found” panel where a server would normally sit.

I checked My Services next, since that seemed like the most direct way to find out if the VPS had been queued somewhere behind the scenes. It hadn’t.

The only line item was Cloud – RamNode Cloud Account, a $0.00 free entry flagged with a status of Fraud. Nothing about that entry mentioned the Standard VPS plan at all.

From there I clicked Place a New Order, on the theory that it would route me back to whatever I’d configured earlier.

Instead it opened a Cloud category page with exactly two options: the same free RamNode Cloud Account and a $5.00/month DDoS-Filtered IP add-on that required an active instance to even set up.

Neither was a server. Neither the sidebar (Dashboard, Services, Billing, Support, Cloud Control Panel, System Status, Affiliates, Order) nor this page linked anywhere back to a VPS purchase.

What I thought: This client area does not communicate, anywhere on the dashboard or in the Cloud category it funnels you toward, that a VPS purchase happens somewhere else. If you land here the way I did, straight out of account creation, you’d reasonably conclude RamNode only sells the two things sitting in front of you: a free account and a $5 IP add-on.

I’d also flag that Fraud label less as an alarm and more as a question mark at this stage, since nothing on the page explains it and there’s no support link offered to ask about it directly.

Purchasing a Server

So registration never let me pick a server, and the client area’s own order flow pointed at products that weren’t the one I wanted.

I wanted to find out how you actually buy a VPS on RamNode, so I backed out of Cloud and opened every other category listed under Services: Shared Hosting, Reseller Hosting – US, Reseller Hosting – EU, Software Licenses, Email Spam Filtering, E-mail Services, and Product Addons.

None of those categories are labeled VPS, and Standard VPS never showed up as an orderable item anywhere in that list, so I can’t confirm from this path where or whether a VPS purchase lives inside the client portal itself.

What I could confirm is that the Order Now mechanism behind those categories works. Under Shared Hosting, I found Shared Hosting – US and Shared Hosting – EU, each $6.00 a month with 15GB storage, unlimited domains, bandwidth, databases, and email accounts, and free SSL.

I clicked Order Now on the EU plan to see the full flow through:

1. Domain – one option, use an existing domain and update its nameservers. I entered hostadvice.com and clicked Use.

2. Configure – a full pricing breakdown before anything hit the cart:

Below that sat a Dedicated IP (DDoS Filtered) add-on at $5.00/month, then a SpamExperts Email Security block with three tiers, None, Incoming Scanning at $2.50/month, and an Incoming & Archiving Bundle at $6.00/month.

I left the add-ons off and clicked Continue.

3. Review & Checkout – the cart carried two line items, not one: the $6.00 Shared Hosting plan I’d just configured, and the same $0.00 Cloud – RamNode Cloud Account carrying the Fraud flag from the dashboard detour earlier. It rode along into a real order without me adding it.

The page also offered a promo code field, a second upsell for the same SpamExperts add-on under a “Say goodbye to Spam” banner, billing details pre-filled from account creation, and seven payment methods: Credit Card through Stripe, PayPal one-time, PayPal Billing Agreements, Alipay, BitPay, ACH, and Bitcoin through Payssion, the last one labeled directly on the button as “NO REFUNDS.”

A notice under the payment fields disclosed that my IP address was being logged for fraud prevention, with a note that orders placed behind a VPN or proxy might need extra verification. I checked the Terms of Service box, entered card details, and clicked Place Order. The service was active within minutes.

What I thought: The checkout engine itself is fast and transparent about what it charges once you reach it, full pricing breakdown, clear add-ons, no surprises at the final screen. What it never did was resolve the question I opened this section with. I confirmed a working purchase path for shared hosting, not for the Standard VPS I originally picked, and nothing in the client portal told me those two are ordered differently or where the VPS path actually is.

Overall Verdict on Ease of Use

RamNode’s order engine works, and works fast, once you’re inside a category that has one. The failure sits in front of it. The VPS pricing page linked from the homepage sends you through a Sign Up Now button that creates an account and nothing else, then a “credit” purchase that isn’t a server purchase either, and drops you into a client portal with zero services and a free account carrying an unexplained Fraud label.

From there, the only categories with working Order Now buttons in this account were Shared Hosting, Reseller Hosting, and a handful of add-ons, none labeled VPS. I got a shared hosting plan live in minutes once I found the right button.

I never found where the Standard VPS I started this section with is actually meant to be purchased. If you’re set on RamNode’s VPS line specifically, plan to open a support ticket before you plan to open your wallet.

Level of Support

RamNode offers three support channels: live chat, a ticket system, and a documentation library. I went into this section with one open question left over from Ease of Use testing, namely where a VPS purchase actually lives in this account, so I tested each channel with that question in mind rather than treating them as three separate, disconnected checks.

Live Chat

I started with live chat because it’s the channel that promises the fastest answer, and I wanted to see if it delivered on that before trying anything else.

I opened it from the chat bubble sitting in the corner of every client dashboard page. Clicking it opened a widget with a terms and privacy notice, then a status line reading “We are online, Typically replies in a few minutes,” and a Start Conversation button.

No chatbot or menu stood between me and that button, so I typed a question about disk resizing and IP retention on a VPS upgrade and submitted it at 11:13 am.

Because the widget had told me to expect a reply within minutes, I left the window open and waited. At 11:35 am, 22 minutes later, what came back wasn’t a person. It was an automated line: “Our team is currently unavailable to chat. We apologize for the delay and will respond as soon as an agent becomes available. If you’d like to create a ticket for faster resolution, you can do so here.”

That directly contradicts the “online, replies in a few minutes” message the widget opened with, so I decided to keep waiting in the same window rather than take the suggestion and open a ticket instead, since I wanted to see how long “as soon as an agent becomes available” actually meant.

A real reply arrived at 11:45 am, from an agent named George, 32 minutes after my original message. The answer covered both parts of what I’d asked without me needing to clarify anything: if you provision from a cloud image, disk resizing after an upgrade happens automatically; if you installed from an ISO, you need something like GParted LiveCD to expand the partition manually after the resize; either way, your data and IP address carry over. That’s specific and correct on both branches of the question.

What I thought: The answer itself was as good as the ticket answer I got later. What isn’t good is the promise sitting in front of it. Anyone reading “online, replies in a few minutes” has no reason to expect a 22-minute automated stall before a person even shows up, and nothing about that gap tells you whether you’re one message deep in a queue or forgotten entirely.

Ticket Support

Next, I wanted to see if a channel with a more formal intake process, one asking for priority, department, and a subject line rather than a single message box, would produce a faster or more complete answer than live chat had.

I opened Support > Open Ticket from the sidebar, which led to a page offering a documentation search bar first, then three department choices: Support for technical issues, Accounts for billing, and Sales/General.

I picked Support, since my question was technical.

The form asked for more structure than live chat did:

As I typed the message, the form surfaced five suggested articles before I’d even submitted, each with a match percentage: Create Instance, Cloud Image vs ISO, Legacy KVM Migration, What is Cloud Hosting, and Virtual Private Cloud.

The percentages ran as high as 780%, which isn’t a real confidence scale for anything, and none of the five actually covered kernel access or root permissions.

Because none of them addressed my question, I dismissed the suggestions and sent the ticket as written at 09:14 on 2026/09/15.

The reply came at 11:03 the same day, from George T., just under two hours later. The answer: “Standard VPS use KVM Virtualization which means you can run your own kernel. We don’t manage the kernel or have root-level control over it.

You can enable custom kernel modules like you would do on a physical server.” That resolves both branches of my question in three sentences, confirms the virtualization type, states plainly that RamNode has no root-level access, and answers the module question by comparing it to a physical server.

I didn’t need to reply again, and the ticket moved to Answered with no back-and-forth.

What I thought: Between the two, the ticket delivered the same quality of answer with a shorter effective wait, since it never included a stall message the way live chat did. If your question can wait two hours, the ticket path is the steadier of the two. If you need someone faster, live chat gets you there eventually, but budget for the gap between “online” and an actual person.

Documentation

After two support exchanges that both worked, I wanted to check whether either of those questions was something I could have answered myself first.

I opened Support > Documentation from the sidebar, which took me to a landing page with a search bar and seven category cards: Deployment Guides, Cloud VPS (Instances), Cloud Storage, Cloud Load Balancers, Legacy KVM, Legacy OpenVZ, and Shared Hosting, each with a one-line description of what it covers and no article counts shown on this top-level page.

The category split makes sense at a glance. Current products (Cloud VPS, Cloud Storage, Cloud Load Balancers, Shared Hosting) sit separately from legacy product lines (Legacy KVM, Legacy OpenVZ), so you’re not stuck guessing whether an article applies to the plan you actually have.

Deployment Guides sits on its own as a cross-product category for platform-specific tutorials rather than being folded into one of the product categories. Nothing here required digging or a second click to understand what each section held.

I decided to open Cloud VPS (Instances) specifically, since that’s the product line I’d been testing throughout this review, and I wanted to see how much material actually sits behind that one card. It opened onto a page with its own search bar and eleven subsections: Getting Started, Migration Guides, Networking, Security & Firewall, Backups & Storage, Images & Operating Systems, etc.

That’s not a thin support page padded with a handful of generic articles, it’s organized closer to a product manual, with entire subsections for security hardening, backups, and API access that a lot of hosts leave out of self-service documentation entirely.

I didn’t see a last-updated date on any article tile from this listing view, so I can’t confirm how current each individual page is from the category page alone.

To judge the actual quality rather than just the count, I opened one article directly: “Create a Cloud VPS Instance,” since that’s the exact question my Ease of Use testing never got answered.

The article is tagged All Regions, Cloud VPS, and a 10-minute read, with a jump-to-section sidebar (Overview, Prerequisites, Access Control Panel, Navigate to Instances, Create New Instance, Configure Details, Select Flavor, Network Selection, Boot Source, SSH Keys, Launch Instance, Access Your Instance) running alongside twelve numbered steps in the main body.

Each step carries its own icon, a short explanation, and several include tip callouts in a highlighted box, like a note that floating IPs are useful for quickly reassigning addresses during failover, or that SSH keys are the recommended login method over a password.

Step four includes an embedded screenshot of the actual control panel sidebar so you can confirm you’re looking at the right menu before clicking anything.

Step one is the one that mattered most for this review: it states plainly that cloud instances are created from the Cloud Control Panel, reachable through the Client Area or directly at cloud.ramnode.com, and that doing so requires “A RamNode cloud account,” listed under Prerequisites as a separate account from the one created during signup, complete with its own Sign Up for Cloud Account button.

What I thought: This single article accounts for the entire gap I’d flagged in Ease of Use. VPS provisioning happens in a separate Cloud Control Panel with its own account layer, something a first-time visitor following the public pricing page into Sign Up Now has no way to know going in.

The article itself is well-built: structured steps, a working sidebar, screenshots where they matter, and tips placed at the exact points where a reader would otherwise guess wrong.

The organization above it holds up too, current products separated from legacy ones, dozens of guides deep enough to cover real troubleshooting rather than marketing copy dressed up as help content. The one gap is that none of this connects back to account creation. Nothing in the signup flow itself links to this article, so the documentation solves the problem completely, but only for someone who thinks to look for it.

Overall Support

If you run into a problem on RamNode, expect a correct, specific answer, both the live chat and ticket exchanges resolved my questions completely in the first reply, no repeated explanations, no generic deflection.

The difference between the two channels is timing. Tickets took roughly two hours with no false start, while live chat’s real answer came in about 32 minutes but only after a stall message that contradicted the widget’s own “online” promise.

If you’re comfortable checking documentation before opening either channel, RamNode’s library is the strongest piece of this entire support setup, organized by current versus legacy products, deep enough to cover real troubleshooting scenarios, and specific enough that the one article I opened solved a structural problem this review had been carrying since the Ease of Use section.

The remaining weak point isn’t the documentation itself, it’s that RamNode never points a new customer toward it at the moment they’d need it most, during signup.
